Persona 19662/25/2023 Elizabeth is the person, the inner self, the true self Alma is the persona, the maschera, the external self, that one projected to society, full of fears, doubts, insecurities which inhibits/mold her actions, her thoughts through the exterior. So, this is my interpretation of this masterpiece:įirst of all, one must understand that Alma and Elizabeth ARE the same person. There are many spoilers below (well, in fact, the entire film). Ok, so if you have not watched the film (and you care about it), it is your time to leave this post. but things change when Alma discover Elizabeth was betraying her. As Elizabeth only listens, Alma feels encouraged to speaks her mind and talk about her most inner feelings. The doctor send them to a peaceful summer cottage beside the beach to help Alma with her task so that Elizabeth could maybe start talking again. Alma (Bibi Andersson), a nurse, is charged with the duty of taking care of Elizabeth Voger (Liv Ullman), an actress who in a theatrical interpretation of Electra becomes suddenly mute. I never thought a film so old could have this effect on me (a big cinema lesson, I have to watch more films).įor all of you who has not watched it I'll make a brief synopsis (by the way, I'm from Spain so please excuse me for my English). I've finished it at 1AM and at 4 AM I was still awake thinking.
